More Window Problems

One of the builders drew my attention to the layout of the door and window in the wall that he is building between the old lounge and the conservatory. He was concerned because the cill height seemed very high up when compared with the others in the extension.

You may remember that we have ordered new stone mullion surrounds for this, so that the house will all be consistent should it ever arise that the conservatory is removed. When the builder was talking to the suppliers he was given the rudimentary sizes which all seemed to work out. However, they don't give you a detailed plan until the order is placed. Because the cill height looks wrong, I got my first look at this plan today, in order to double check the measurements :

Now that I can see this plan, the problem is evident straight away - the cill height comes half way up the door reveal. If I look at any other window/door combinations in the house I can see that this is more normally around a third. The reason for this is that we asked that the height of the each window mullion match those that we have already had installed elsewhere. The problem comes from the fact that the window head has to match the level of the door head, and all measurements are then taken downwards from this point, thus setting the window much higher in the wall than all the others.

Double checking what has been done so far, it can be seen that it matches the plan. However, this will not do. If you sit in a chair, you can't see out the window ! I have asked that the chief builder come round today to discuss the options. We just have to hope the stone mullion suppliers have not started making our batch yet.

This goes to show how important it is to check every detail of the project, view all the plans and make some measurements in-situ, just to make sure everything makes sense.
