Revised Plan Over Front Door
We have long been slightly unhappy with the arrangement proposed over the front door. If you look at the original Front Elevation Drawing (opens in new window) you can see that the existing flat-roofed porch remains, and the headroom for the upstairs corridor is achieved with a flat-roofed timber dormer window. This latter part is a bit like having a shed on the roof.
Anyway, when the builder said to us that he thought we could do better, we set to and brain stormed some ideas. While the idea of replacing the timber structure with some form of glass attrium was appealing, we couldn't solve the problem of getting the rainwater from the roof behind it to drain. We are in an area with a lot of trees and the thought of creating a leaf trap on the roof soon loses it's appeal.
What we have come up with is less radical, but we thing is an improvement. A revised sketch is shown below :
An extra gable has been added to mirror the one to it's left. Not only does it get rid of the flat roofed wooden window, but it also allows us to put a slope on the porch, making the main entrance to the house more imposing, and also, we think, makes a better link between the old parts and the new.
This new drawing was emailed to the Council Planning department today, for consideration as a minor ammendment.
