Cavity Closure

Something I forgot to mention yesterday was that the cavity between the two block walls is being closed at the top. Lightweight "celcon" blocks are being cemented in place at the top of the two block walls to cover the gap. As you can see in the photo below, they are shaped to match the slope of the roof :

What interests me slightly about this is how the roofspace will be ventilated. I am used to the eaves being a source of airflow under the roof and this looks to me like it is going to block off that airflow. However, if it keeps the mice out, I am all for it !

Note how the rafters project beyond the outer stone wall. This is to match the existing house which has the same construction. These ends will remain visible below the guttering. In the picture you can see that the far left hand rafter is actually a fake as the real one is lost in the 90 degree turn of the wall. Just another indication of the attention to detail from these builders.

I am not sure if I have shown a picture of the completed roof timber work from above before, but in case I haven't here is one. It's a good view of the new chimney stack too.

The front gable is to the right of the picture, with the rear one just hiding behind the ridge board. You can just make out the two steel purlins and the horizontal joists that will carry the ceiling of the room below. This loft space won't be very big - certainly not tall enough to stand up, or keep a model railway !
