Subfloor Preparations

Last night, the kitchen and utility areas were cleared of everything except the cooker, which has nowhere it can easily go.  This included taking up the existing floor coverings, which in most places comprised 2, but in some places 3, layers of lino.  It came up in chunks, so now there is a big pile of rolled up pieces in the front garden.

Here are some views before today's work started.  This one shows that some of the old lino did not readily come up from the floor, though it is only a thin backing layer, so does not add any thickness.  It is not worth the effort to get it up, so will be covered over again.  Note also that the mist coat of paint only reaches up as far as Jan can reach !  Guess who needs to do the top part :

Looking the other way into the concrete floor of the utility area :

Washing machine plumbing :

Here is a close up of the well where the doormat used to be.  This is going to be filled in using the same latex screed used on the rest of the floor, but mixed with sharp sand :

Looking through the arch from the utility area to the kitchen, it is not obvious, but in the archway the floor slopes upwards to account for different levels of the concrete and wooden areas.  The difference is about 2" :

At the end of the day, the latex was in place, and very sticky :

And 3mm ply sheets had been stapled onto the wooden floor to give a stable level surface :

I asked that the ply not be fixed in the one corner where I think some floor repairs are going to be needed :
