More Loft Insulation
The loft above the main extension was insulated with a single 150mm layer between the roof joists some time ago, but because it is used for storage, the second perpendicular layer was never done.
This week I ordered up some more rolls of insulation and set to solving this problem. In B&Q I had spotted some "loft stilts" made of plastic and designed to elevate the chipboard loft deck panels high enough for the second layer of insulation underneath. I bought 6 to try them out. At one end of each is a sprung U-channel section designed to clip over the joist, and at the other a wide circular platform for the board to sit on. Stupidly I didn't photograph it, so here is an image stolen from the B&Q website :
They seem to support the panel, but have a tendency to rock. My conclusion was that they are fine for storing stuff on, but I wouldn't trust them for a board I planned to stand on. Here they are "in action" supporting the Wharfedale XP2 speakers I bought the weekend before I went off to university, and another box that looks like it should be the other way up :
For the main storage area near to the loft hatch, I opted for the heavy duty approach. A couple of perpendicular floor joists :
Insulation laid, and boards being screwed down :
The finished (nearly) job :
You may have noticed that I started this whole job by putting in a couple of loft lights, using a trailing lighting circuit cable that I had asked the electrician to leave for me for just this purpose.
