The Old Spiral Staircase Ceiling
Down in the basement we have a square gap in the plasterboard ceiling, which represents the hole where the spiral staircase was supposed to go. In fact the hole is really a temporary structure, with double joists on each side and some temporary cross joists just to support the floor above :
Here is the finished result, which took a little longer than expected because two of the joists were not very well positioned and needed to be pushed up harder against the bottom of the floor in order to do their job properly.
The "messy" bit at the top of the red wall is a baulk of timber pushed into a gap between the top of the wall and the bottom of the joist. It's front face was proud of the wall, so I have hammered it further into the gap. It is now wedged tight, so when the plasterer returns to make good all of this, he should be able to just tack some stainless steel mesh to this and plaster over it.

Noted learned explanation yours of 19 July re height etc. Solution looks great now. Been a long journey but at least you keep dry now going downstairs! Bldg Regs can be a problem even tho' they are well intentioned. At least you didn't discover Bats. We did. Cheers
Bill.
