This and That
There is only one major task left to do now, and that's the basement floor. Everything else is itsy-bitsy little things. Here are a selection of these little jobs that have either been finished in the last couple of days, or are "work in progress".
Guttering. A start has been made on this, though none of the downpipes will be installed until the scaffold is taken down. Too much danger of breakage apparently.
The guttering is a little untidy to be honest, though I don't think even the parts that have been done are complete yet. Here is an end-on view of an example :
To match the existing house, the ends of the rafters deliberately project beyond the house walls. A double depth batten supports the last row of tiles, and another batten is required to space the gutter out to the correct place. As you can see a layer of plastic (looks like DPC) is installed to interlock under the roof-felt, then into the gutter. However, I can't help thinking that the way it dips down under the battens then back up into the gutter is wrong. Any water that makes it through to the felt (admittedly this shouldn't be much) is going to collect in this area rather than in the gutter. This is something I need to check.
The lead valleys have now been lined with mortar to seal the lead with the tiles. At the very top some spray expanding foam fills a void. This will be cut back and mortared to match the rest.
Mortar is used to fill the gaps at the end of the gables too :
Final ridge tile is fixed in place once the lead flashings around the chimney are done :
Finally a start has been made on the tile hanging above the dormers :
