Clearing Up

On Friday the builder said to me that top of his priority list for the coming week was to clear out the basement room in preparation for black-jacking, insulation and screeding of the floor. However, I said to him that I thought he could make better use of his lads time, and that I could do clearing up myself, so that is what I have been doing today. To be honest, most of the mess was mine anyway. I have been storing my salvaged wood down there, and the dust and rubble mainly comes from when I chipped the render off of the old wall.

It took a surprisingly long time, but by the time I had finished it looked very nice. After a while the dust was so fine that sweeping with a broom became ineffective. Instead I used a petrol driven leave blower to blow it all out the doorways.

While doing this I was thinking about that age-old complaint people have with builders - they never clear up properly after themselves. But, if you think about it, you wouldn't normally pay someone to sweep your drive would you ? (don't answer that !). If I am going to pay a builder some of my hard earned money, I want him to be building, not doing something I could just as easily do myself.
