Dormer Plan
With reference to the question posed yesterday, as to what the builder's plan is for the triangle above the dormer window mullion, I had a chat with him about it this morning. The problem is that the building regulations insist that this part of the building, like any other has a double skin with an insulated cavity. Doing the outer skin in stone pushes the cavity off of the back of the mullion and makes the internal structure much more difficult. In fact it will also be rather ugly as a false ceiling would be needed, coming 6 inches out from the top of the window.
The plan is not, in fact to use render, but to tile hang this area, and to lead line the cheeks at the sides. We have agreed to this. As you can see from the photo below, the plywood is set back from the top of the mullion slightly, to allow for the battening. The ridge tiles are now also in place.
The scaffolders have been back and removed the upper deck, which now provides much better access to the roof. It also makes everything more visible for us :

Hi - a little mystified by comment in brackets re: conservatory and "load bearing" - presume you meant when the "lintel" is in position! Not sure what a "label" can do to help you.
Cheers.

Hi Essex watchers. The "label" is the decorative eyebrow shape above the mullion windows. The point I was trying to make is that it takes up vertical space, and the attachment point for the conservatory has to be above this. It is therefore much higher than it used to be and certainly higher up than the conservatory roofline. It would be fine if the space could be taken up with a simple angled flashing to cover the gap, but unfortunately it has to bear some load too. Maybe we just need to get new side pieces to make the roof taller at the back - or, if money were no object, throw the conservatory away and start again !
