Joists

The joists between the rafters were installed in the latest area of work today. As before, the joists are bolted to the sides of the rafters, and a strengthening bar goes down the middle, to which the joists are all attached from above. In turn, this is suspended by verticals down from the ridge plate :

The second picture also shows an access hole I asked to be cut to join the two lofts together. It saves having another loft hatch (there are already two in the house, the big new bedroom adds a third and I really didn't want a fourth). The downside is that this wall is now less of a fire break, but I figure with the loft area already divided into 3 we probably have enough of those.

Our previous house was a Georgian terraced townhouse, in which the lofts of all four houses were joined in one continuous space ! (at least they were until the neighbours had some renovations done, then building-regs kicked in).

Shad - This last picture is exactly the same construction as my garage - ie spanning a large area. I took the opportunity to put some horizontal bolts through the vertical and horizontals. I suspect expect yours (as mine) is secured only with nails from a gun. It WILL sag slightly and this won't do any harm - that was my thinking anyway ! Might avoid a cracking plasterboard ceiling in a year or two.- Dave W

You can always put a very basic fire door in the orifice now or later (easier now). Colin E
