Chimney - Half Way

Progress Posted by Picasa
Major progress on the chimney demolition today. It looked like rain this morning, but it never came to anything, so I spent most of the afternoon, and a proportion of the morning, on my newly erected scaffold tower. The left hand half of the chimney is now done. I started to take down the inner core, but stopped as I felt the rest of it would be a bit unstable if I continued. I figure that when I move the tower to the other side, I should be able to reach across and push down the remaining breeze blocks without too much trouble.

Because I had followed the suggestions, and leaned the tower into the wall, it was rock solid when at maximum height. It became a bit more wobbly as I removed the bits that it was leaning against, but by this time it was lower, hence not a cause for concern.

It doesn't look high, but at first it certainly felt like it while I was up there. My feet were very tense, but after a while I forgot about the height and just got on with the job. As you can see from the first picture I blocked one of the large gaps with a louvre door I found on a skip, just to make it psychologically more secure. I knew that door would come in handy !

I would have thought the next 'important' job was to move your TV ariel otherwise how are you going to keep up with all those DIY/renovation programmes :-)

Hi Ian. It's an optical illusion. The TV ariel is actually on the other chimney of the house. There is a photo from a slightly different angle on one of the earlier blog entries that shows this.
Cheers,
Steve.
