Spiral Staircase
One of the things that bugs me about the proposed layout of our new basement room is the lack of available wall space. If you take a look at the Basement Plan drawing you will see that there are windows, fireplace, doors and stairs on every wall. Radiator positioning hasn't even been considered yet ! Not much room for desks, bookcases etc. This wasn't quite how I envisaged this room being.
I am thinking at the moment, about the possibility of using a spiral staircase instead of the straight flight currently proposed. This would free up space on the right hand wall. Ability to transport large items of furniture is not a problem as the room will have it's own access to outside. There may be an issue with building regulations. I am sure the Structural Engineer told me that it was mandatory that we had a fire door at the bottom of the stairs. If this is so, a spiral might be out of the question. I will have to check with the Building Surveyor.

At first a spiral staircase seems attractive for saving space but generally they take up a 1,5m by 1,5m floorspace top and bottom. A straight staircase uses about the same m2 for the arrival hole, about 0,8m by 2.8m, but there is usable space on the departure floor under the stairs.
Something with a quarter turn top or bottom might be a possiblity.
Hi Ian. I take your point about the M2. The thought behind using a spiral is to save wall space - I don't mind so much if the stairs come more out into the room. I will have to prepare some scale overlays for my plans in order to investigate the differnt options.
Cheers,
Steve
