On the front projection the existing house is on the left, with the lower roofline. The new extension is to the right around the gable. The bit in between is the existing extension that is being raised to match the roof height of the new bit.
Similarly, when viewed from the rear, the original Victorian cottage is on the right, the existing extension is in the middle, behind the conservatory, and the new bit is the three stories to the left.

Just been looking at the plans and noticed that smoke detectors, extractor fans etc. are marked. Are all these things now required for building regs ? As the householder do you have any choice over the number/position etc.
I also noticed the shower in the en-suite. Wasn't sure of the construction but you might consider having three walls around the shower base with just a simple door rather than the glass cabinets with sliding doors. We've found that the sliding doors tend to jam and break and the sliding mechanism is difficult to clean. I'd thoughourly recommend a big shower tray 900mm ?
Hi Ian. Yes, certainly smoke alarms are part of the building regs and it looks like they have been since 1991. These require that "all new and refurbished dwellings to be fitted with mains operated smoke alarms". Location is as follows :
1) at least one on each floor
2) within 7m of kitchens and living rooms or other areas where fires may start
3) within 3m of all bedroom doors
4) at least 300mm from any wall or ceiling light fitting
In addition the alarms have to be interconnected so that if one goes off, they all do, and they must have battery backup. They should be powered with a circuit that does NOT have an RCD.
Thanks also for the shower comments. Generally I hate most of the shower cubicles and their rather naff door mechanisms. There are some good ones on the market where you just walk through a gap between overlapping walls. I don't know what they are like to use though. Maybe drafty ? Also can you get a base in anything other than plastic or fibreglass these days ?
