Second Step

This is not really a second step, as the step is actually formed by the oak beam that supports this part of the landing. However, the top floorboard left by the builders was very uneven and squeaky, and had no nosing. It's unevenness was because they had taken no account of the metal joist hangers that are underneath it.

Firstly the top floorboard was removed and discarded. A small spacer was attached to the oak on the right hand side to support the riser (the angle of the oak beam isn't quite perpendicular to the landing, but I want the steps to be square).

The riser was fitted first, again with glue and dowels so as not to show any screw heads. The right hand end grain carries the half moon moulding added with Dad's router. A new floorboard had shallow slots routed out of the bottom to clear the joist hangers, a half moon nosing, and a 45 degree angled mitre to meet the long edging strip that will go the length of the upper landing. Here is the finished job, albeit with the edging strip still to do :
