Next Stud Wall

A couple of days ago I took a day off work to try and recover some "build time" lost by a total lack of any progress over the last weekend.

Dad came over to help me again, and we started on the stud walls in the master bedroom area. I reckon we made pretty good progress :

It is not completely clear from the picture, but I have opted for an offset-stud technique to cut down on sound transmission through the wall. This is something I discussed before on this blog - basically the plasterboard on each side of the wall is attached to independent studs to limit the physical transmission routes through the structure. The gaps between will be filled with a zig-zagging strips of insulating material - either standard loft insulation (as recommended by the builder who did our conservatory roof) or proper acoustic mineral wool (as recommended by the retailers of proper acoustic mineral wool !).

The floor plate and ceiling plate are full width ~150mm and the studs ~100mm so they overlap by 50mm. Adjacent studs have their front edges aligned to opposite sides of the floor & ceiling plates. The horizontal noggins, still to be installed, will need to be turned on their sides in order not to interact with each other, or the opposing studs.

The studs are attached by vertical nailing down from the top through the ceiling plate, and skew nailing into the floor plate at the bottom. The far right hand stud in the picture is full depth and forms the left hand side of the en-suite bathroom door.
