Bedroom Options

Post 250 !

As you may know we have always been a little undecided about how to handle the space designated "New Bedroom" on the plans. As it has been constructed, it is a square space 6.7m by 6.7m (into alcove), with triple aspect :

The plans show this space split up using a dividing stud wall to create an en-suite bathroom and a couple of cupboards under the soffits of the sloping roof :
I considered this to still be too large a space for a bedroom, so suggested a walk-in wardrobe :
This is the design that has laid on the table for the past few months, but Jan has never been happy with it. Now that we are getting to the point where I need to start constructing the stud walls, we have had a few arguments about this, almost to the point of abandoning building any form of internal structure in here at all.

A couple of weeks ago I challenged Jan to come up with something that she would prefer, and here is the result :

She has retained the walk-in wardrobe (albeit a little smaller) and extended the en-suite bathroom outwards to encompass the window to the right of the fireplace. It has the added advantage of an extra bathroom door so that it doubles as a 2nd family bathroom as well an en-suite.

Just for the sake of discussion, I have toyed with a couple of minor amendments to this proposal. The first moves the door to the walk-in wardrobe to it's end, thus giving extra usable wall-space in the bedroom. The downside is that this door is then not in the bedroom :
The second moves the bedroom door back, at an angle, to solve the previous problem :

I am still not sure which of all these solutions I prefer.

What a big room! BUT - aren't you in danger of running out of "bedhead/side table" space in the later versions? Just a thought - take vers. 3 (reading down) and 'shunt' bathroom en bloc to right so shower is where r.h. cupboard is and have 'L' shaped but smaller walk-in w'robe at left corner, thus keep fireside window in bedroom - it's nice to see different views - and keep both walk-in and bedhead space albeit a little less clothes storage. Or is that a sacrilege? What fun! Cheers. Bill (Essex)

Sorry! My earlier comment should read as for vers two (2) i.e. without the long walk-in w/r.Sorry.

Hi Bill, thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, what is not obvious from the birds-eye plan view is that these two cupbards to either end of the bathroom are under the soffits and hence do not have full headroom. You certainly wouldn't get a shower into either of them. Regarding the furniture space, this was one of the reasons for moving the door to the walk-in wardrobe. This gives the option of the bed facing the window, backing onto the en-suite wall, or at 90 degrees, backing on to the wardrobe wall, whilst still leaving space for dressing table etc - I think. Maybe I will do what I did as a child, and cut out some scaled furniture to shunt around the plan !
Cheers, Steve.
PS - I am impressed that you read it twice today !

Hi Steve,

Why are there two doors into the en-suite? It makes it more like a family bathroom....S & I would want to keep the little horrors out!

Hmmmm again, this post might get doubled coz I posted just now and it doesn't appear to have got through.

What I'd said was....that having re-read your post that you were already thinking of a secondary family bathroom, & I commented that it might not be necessary as you had only one teenage girl who would take up residence in the family bathroom.......(and also, her name is not Louise!)

then I commented that I thought that if you really wanted all that space in the en-suite then I'd go for the last picture which retains the door to the walk-in within your bedroom, hence giving a bit of privacy when you & J are dressing

Hi Chris,
Don't for one minute imagine that teenage boys are any better than teenage girls in terms of their demands on a bathroom ! I'm sure it wasn't like that in my day ! We had one bathtub, in t' middle o' road and we used it every year, whether we needed to or not......
BTW, the last plan, with the angled doorway, is the current favourite.
Cheers.
Steve
