Building is Happening Again

The building is underway again. As promised, the stone was delivered yesterday so is ready to start working with. Meanwhile, work on the chimney and walls has continued. The lintel and the first flue components have been assembled :

This picture also shows, on the wall behind the right hand chimney pillar, the padstone onto which the steel will rest. The one on the other side is more clearly shown in the next picture :

Obviously it is important to get these padstones accurately located as they directly affect the height and level of the beam. To this end, the builder used a laser sighting device to transfer the level of the floor of the existing house out into the garden, then back into the position of these padstones. This should ensure that the floor levels between the old and new parts of the building match.

The final picture shows a detail of the flue from the fireplace, angling towards the camera. This will then turn vertically to be lost in the side pillar of the chimney breast in the room above, so as to avoid the fireplace therein.
