Tile Research

Jan called the builder this morning to seek his opinion about the roofing tiles. he suggested a visit to the local Bradstone depot would be a good idea, so she headed up to South Cerney, where some of their materials are made. She returned with samples of their two Cotswold stone tiles - the "Standard" and the "Conservation".

Alongside our chosen stone the standard tile certainly looked Ok. However, when I returned from work, to assist with the research I climbed onto the roof and removed one of the existing tiles. It is very big - about 18 inches long and 9 inches wide. Some of them are bigger still - double width 18 inch square. When in situ there is a high degree of overlap - only about a third of the tile is showing. This of course is very "weathered", but the original colour was surprisingly grey. I was expecting a more yellowy tinge to match in with the colour of the local stone. The Bradstone is certainly very different. However, what might be best is to submit the Bradstone to gain approval, just to allow the builder to get on with the stonework. We can perhaps seek an alteration to tile approval at a later date, claiming we have found a better match (assuming we do !).
