Provisional Piling Date

Jan called the piling company but couldn't get through. However, an eMail elicited a surprisingly helpful response from the secretary ! She confirmed that calculations were being prepared for the structural engineer, and also offered us a start date of 5th December. If we can't use this we will need to wait until mid-January.

I spoke to the structural engineer to see if he could pull this together for the 5th. He was confident that the council will not be a problem. In his words, he will "smooth it over with the building inspector".

We have therefore sent an eMail accepting the start date of 5th December. Jan will check tomorrow that the groundworks contractor is in a position to do the preparatory work.

We are taking a slight risk, in not waiting for official council approval, but the structural engineer is so confident it will not be a problem, and that he is happy with the design, that we have decided to go-ahead.

The problem is we have nothing in writing from the structural engineer.
He is such a snake in the grass and he never actually committs to anything - he will "smooth it over with the building inspector".
What does that mean? What problems is he expecting?
As if he has got the authority to over rule a building inspector - full of his own self importance if you ask me - still we have to involve the b--t-rd, so I suppose he is important!
