Stairs Under Construction

The stairs being made for us are from oak with half open risers and a 3 step winder at the bottom to exit into the room. Unlike the drawing in my previous blog entry, the stairs will not start immediately to the left as you come into the sitting room. The building regs specify that after a door, there must be at least 400mm of landing before the descent starts to this effectively pushes the end of the staircase right down to the outside wall of the house, with the 3 step winder to turn you into the room. The added bonus of this is that it avoids (just) a set of central heating pipes, that would otherwise have to be rerouted.

We have opted for open risers because this means that the staircase has a finished and viewable underside, so there is no need for plastering or covering it in, as we did with our other staircase.

The staircase is now under construction at the workshop and today I paid a visit to check on progress :
