Sidetracked
We have a friend of Adam's coming to lodge with us for two years to attend the local college in Cirencester. Consequently we have been sidetracked into preparing our spare room for him.
The plasterer has been back to deal with the old doorway that used to connect bedrooms 2 and 3 which was bricked up by the builders long ago. It became clear whilst preparing for this work that the builders had simply sawn through the old floorboards in order to get access to the top of the downstairs wall in order to build up the new blockwork. No attempt was made to put in a new joist to support the cut edge of the floorboards. I have had to address this with a batten screwed to the new wall :
This picture also shows one of four new sockets. The electrician left tails from his new upstairs ring main, with a temporary link across from the two ends. When I second fix these new sockets the temporary link will go and this room will be incorporated into that ring. I have also had to address the lighting. Instead of the current single wall light there are now two wall lights and a ceiling rose. I have also taken the opportunity to re-insulate the loft after removing the old insulation and hoovering up the mess.
We can't face stripping the wallpaper and the risk of plaster falling off as it did in Adam's room next door, so we are just going to paint over it. The plasterer has gone over the channels I have cut for cables, so these won't be too noticeable.
Doug arrives on the bank holiday weekend, so we haven't got long to finish this.
