Lounge Access Problem - and Solution
You may remember a previous entry on this blog concerning the possibility of a spiral staircase to the basement. You may also remember that the option we decided upon was as depicted on the final drawing of my 2nd March post, as follows :
Today the builder pointed out a flaw with this proposal. The half tonne steel beam that bisects the new lounge ceiling to support the structure above, will plant itself into the wall directly above the door from the existing sitting room into the lounge. This is not recommended, as all that weight, really needs solid wall below it. We are therefore expecting to have to implement this more like the drawing below, with just the single opening in the existing wall :
This is back to having to navigate two doors to gain access to the lounge, but it is no worse than in the original proposal. The only other difficulty I foresee with this is that it requires the spiral staircase to have a quarter segment (90 degs) top landing. A lot of the staircases I have seen on the web have a smaller landing than this. The disadvantage of increasing the angle of this landing is that the stairs have to drop "faster" (i.e. each stair has to be taller or narrower) in order to gain the necessary head clearance for the point when the treads spiral under this landing.
One way to resolve this is to move the opening in the wall as close to the beam as possible, thus introducing an angled door into the room :
