Electrics

Jan and I spent a good proportion of today planning the electrics. With a bare shell of a room, you have to think about where you might want to put the TV, HiFi, where you might want to plug in a vacuum cleaner, to say nothing of the sequence of lighting to get up and down the stairs. We have even been considering where we might hang pictures, in case we want picture lights.

It is not easy, but any mistakes at the planning stage are hard to rectify post-install.

All printed out now, ready for review !

And don't forget the Ethernet ......when we moved to old common, Sue said we should install CAT5 in each room as we redecorated ....I said "nah, we'll never need it".....

she's never let me forget it!!!!

Something you might want to consider is switchable sockets. For example, a 'light switch' by the door actually operates a plug socket the other end of the room. That way you can have a lamp (standard/table) plugged in and switched off as you leave/enter rather than fumble accross the room in the dark at bedtime.

Hi Ian, yes, we probably will go for switchable sockets. We had a couple in our old house in Portsmouth - bedside lamps in a room with a very low ceiling. It worked very well.

Hi Chris, yes to the CAT5 too. This will definately not be forgotten, especially as Jan won't have wireless in the house ! In fact I will probably take two CAT5 cables to the majority of the rooms, and use one for network, one for telephones. I have also been looking at the new HDMI cables, but can't really work out whether/why I would want them. Also, it seems you can only buy them with connectors on, making it difficult to pull them through small holes. Probably won't bother !
